"Within America there lives an invisible society made visible by the heart, intellect and eye of Laura Wilson. With this very human document, she joins the ranks of our finest photographers" Richard Avedon
Isolated on the prairies of Montana far from mainstream America, the Hutterites live on large farms and ranches. They shun the modern world. Less assimilated than the Amish and the Mennonites, they practise communal living through shared ownership of all property and income.
This exhibition complements the publication of "Hutterites of Montana" by Laura WIlson. This stunning book is a unique document of the Hutterites comprising Laura Wilson's photographs and interviews with them conducted over a fourteen-year period.
Wilson explains how she met the Hutterites and received unprecedented access to photograph them in their day to day life. Then, often using words of the community, she reveals fascinating details about their history, their leadership structure, their religious beliefs, the place of women in their society, the education of their young and the strength of their communal tradition.
"Hutterites of Montana" is published by Yale University Press (ISBN:0-300-08339-4) and is available to buy from the Gallery at the price of £27.50. For UK postal orders, please add an extra £6.50 to cover postage and packing. |
