Artist Intro  "Venice - City of Haunting Dreams"
Artist name / Photographer   Simon Marsden
"On we went, floating towards the heart of this strange place - with water all about us where never water was elsewhere - and, everywhere, the same extraordinary silence"
Charles Dickens

"We hear the faint sounds of laughter and of shouted farewells floating up out the distance; and then, the strange pageant being gone, we have lonely stretches of glittering water - of stately buildings - of blotting shadows - and of weird stone faces creeping into the moonlight. And over all broods that mysterious silence, that stealthy quiet, that befits so well this old dreaming Venice."
Mark Twain

To many people, Venice is quite simply the most beautiful city in the world. But walk away from St Mark's Square and into the maze of narrow streets and canals and you find yourself in another world where time has stood still. As you retrace your steps over an ancient bridge, a rat swims across the canal to disappear beneath the massive iron gates at the water entrance of a ruined palazzo. The mist begins to roll in from the lagoon as you stare at the grotesque stone head that surmounts these gates. The smell of the stagnant water is overpowering and the only sound is the haunting cry of a gondolier…

A firm believer in a parallel 'spirit world', Marsden captures the city of the tyrannical Venetian State. His startlingly atmospheric photographs are beautifully reproduced alongside letters, poems and quotes from the world's greatest artists, writers, composers and philosophers who have always been drawn to this city of dreams.

Sir Simon Marsden is an internationally acclaimed photographer of the fantastic and supernatural. Simons images can be found in many prestigious collections, including the Getty Museum in California, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. He has also exhibited in New York, Brussels, Milan and Vienna. Simon Marsden was born in 1948 and lives with his wife and family in an old rectory on the Lincolnshire Wolds.
