"The photos are tactile. They're very touch orientated. But that's the relationship we have with our animal. That's what we love, when we hold them and pat them. Their warm bodies, that's the quality that comes out in my photographs" Deborah Samuel, The Toronto Star April 2002 For dog lovers, here is an unforgettable collection of portraits that celebrate the beauty and spirit of humankind's most devoted companion. Focusing her lens on purebred dogs, photographer Deborah Samuel has captured their ever-changing moods and eccentricities. Through her closely observed photographs we come to understand the vitality of a Dalmatian, the roguish humour of a Jack Russell Terrier, the diffident elegance of a Greyhound.
Complimenting the 'dogs' are portraits of 'pups' where Deborah pursues the true spirit of puppyhood in her luminous portraits. In these enchanting photographs, Deborah captures the downy fur, still-soft paws, relentless energy, utter exhaustion, and total adoration that make puppies irresistible. Featuring purebreds in their first year of life from a 10 ounce Jack Russell to a 31 pound Saint Bernard - Samuel's photographs remind us that charm comes in many shapes and sizes.
Deborah Samuel was born in Vancouver, Canada, and raised in Toronto and Ireland. She has worked throughout her career as a commercial photographer and filmmaker in the music and fashion industries, and as a fine art photographer she has shown extensively in Canada, the United States, and internationally. Her work is represented in the prestigious and varied public and private collections such as The Royal Ontario Museum, Winnipeg Art Museum, and Santa Barbara Art Museum, as well as numerous private and corporate collections. She has lectured and led photography workshops throughout North America.
Samuel lives with her husband and three dogs in Santa Barbara, California. She began this photographic project several years ago with a desire to document the lives of her own pets. Word spread around the Douglas Preserve, where Samuel walks her dogs. Friends, and then strangers, approached her to photograph their pets as well. This book is a result of that exploration into what is essentially dog.
